Pell Grant Proration Policy

U.S. Department of Education Federal Pell Grant Proration Policy

Beginning with the 2024-2025 aid year, the U.S. Department of Education established a Pell Grant proration policy. Within the policy, if an undergraduate student is not enrolled full-time (at least 12 or more hours), their Pell Grant amount for the semester will be prorated to match the student's total semester enrollment.

Please note: 12 hours is considered full time; therefore, any hours over 12 credit hours will not increase the amount of the Pell Grant award.

For example, if a student enrolls full-time, or a total of 12 or more hours, they will receive 100% of their semester's worth of Pell Grant. If a student enrolls in a total of 8 hours, they will receive 67% of their semester's worth of Pell Grant.

For more specific examples, if a student enrolls full-time, or a total of 12 or more hours, and they are eligible to receive $3,698 in Pell Grant for a semester, they would be eligible to receive the full $3,698, or 100% of their award. However, if a student enrolls in 8 hours and they are eligible to receive $3,698 in Pell Grant for a semester, they would only receive 67% of their award, or $3,698 x .67 for a total of $2,477.
