Education Away Opportunities
In the spring and summer of even-numbered years, the Biology Department offers an Education Away opportunity in Costa Rica. Students can enroll in BI 419 Tropical Ecology during the spring semester and BI 420 Field Experience during Maymester, earning 4 semester hours of credit that can be applied toward their Ecology elective in the major.
Students spend the latter part of the spring semester preparing for the trip by studying the flora and fauna of Costa Rica, followed by 10 days in the country in May. While there, they visit three biological stations: La Selva Biological Station in a lowland rainforest, Monteverde in a cloud forest, and Palo Verde in a tropical dry forest. Each station offers students hands-on opportunities to engage with scientists and explore tropical ecosystems. This trip is open to students who have completed BI 112.
