Biology Degree - PreHealth Biology Option

The Prehealth Biology option is designed to prepare pre-health professions students for the various prerequisite courses required by health professions schools, while maintaining the essential curriculum that ensures our majors receive a well-rounded biology education. This option was established in response to recent CPOS requirements for students receiving federal financial aid, as well as to accommodate our pre-health students who are student-athletes and need to maintain NCAA eligibility. It includes the same major core as all our biology options but offers greater flexibility in pre-health electives.

We require an upper-level social science course from a curated list of psychology and sociology courses that focus on the psychological or sociological aspects of working as a healthcare provider. Health professions schools are placing greater emphasis on social science knowledge alongside hard science knowledge, and some institutions already require more advanced social science coursework than just general or introductory levels.

We offer a pooled category of “pre-health electives” that includes a diverse range of courses that may be required as prerequisites for various health professions. This category acts as a “coursework buffet,” allowing students to select different combinations tailored to their specific pre-health path. This flexibility is more effective than attempting to create a rigid “one size fits all” list of requirements.
