Intervention Programs
Conditional Admission
High school graduates who do not meet the standards for unconditional admission may be granted conditional admission if they meet all of the following conditions:
- At least 11 approved units have been earned from among the high school academic core;
- The high school GPA is at least 2.0 unweighted.
Students admitted conditionally must present the UNA Office of Admissions with a final high school transcript before classes begin the semester for which they are admitted. Such students will follow prescribed courses of study designed to strengthen their basic skills in areas where weaknesses are apparent.
Academic Warning
Students who meet the following criteria will be placed on Academic Warning:
- Any undergraduate student who has attempted fewer than 18 hours at UNA with a UNA Institutional GPA less than 2.00 will be placed on Academic Warning.
- Any undergraduate student who has attempted more than 18 hours at UNA whose term GPA falls below 2.00 but has a minimum Institutional GPA of 2.00 or above will be placed on Academic Warning.
Because students’ needs vary and the reasons they are on Academic Warning are often personal, additional one-on-one meetings with the Retention Advisor in our office provide students with individualized attention to their particular academic situation. Students who fail to meet individually with the Retention Advisor will have a Hold placed on their registration for the upcoming semester by our office. Students who schedule and keep an appointment with the Retention Advisor will have this Hold released, and they will be allowed to pre-register or register for classes.
Students on Academic Warning should regularly check their UNA emails for information regarding their academic plans or standing. For questions or appointments, contact gwilliams4@una.edu or 256.765.5020.
Academic Probation
Any undergraduate student who has attempted more than 18 hours at UNA will be placed on academic probation at the end of any semester in which the student’s UNA institutional GPA falls below 2.00. Probationary status may be removed by achieving a minimum UNA institutional GPA of 2.00 or above. If a student on probation achieves a term GPA of 2.00 or higher but remains below the minimum UNA institutional GPA of 2.00, probation is continued.
Students who receive the scholastic standing of Academic Probation must meet with the Retention Advisor in our office to discuss their academic standing, what they must do to be removed from probation, and what campus resources are available to help them succeed. Students who fail to meet individually with the Retention Advisor will have a Hold placed on their registration for the upcoming semester by our office. Students who schedule and keep an appointment with our Retention Advisor will have this Hold released and be allowed to pre-register or register for classes.

Academic Suspension
A student is placed on academic suspension for one semester at the end of any semester or term in which a student on academic probation fails to maintain a 2.0 GPA on work attempted during that period. After one fall or spring semester on suspension, a suspended student will be automatically eligible for re-enrollment but will be required to re-enroll through the Office of Admissions.
As an alternative to sitting out a penalty semester, Active Suspension students can participate in an Active Suspension Program that allows continued enrollment with a specific target of addressing carefully defined academic deficiencies. Students wishing to participate in the Active Suspension Program will fill out a form and schedule a time to discuss their situation and class schedule for the upcoming semester with the Retention Advisor in the University Success Center.
The current policy mandating that suspended students sit out one regular semester would be retained for those students who do not participate in the Active Suspension Program.
